As the 2023 Free Agency period opens up, new Predators GM has made a splash by signing two former Maple Leafs to multi-year deals.
Ryan O’Reilly spent last season split with the the St. Louis Blues before being traded midseason to the Maple Leafs to help them for their playoff push, and in 53 games last season O’Reilly had 16 goals and 30 points, and also put up a further nine points in 11 games during the Leafs playoff run.
The 32-year-old has signed on for a reported 4 year deal with an AAV at about $4.5 million per season as he brings a much younger Predators team much needed leadership presence on and off the ice, as their might not have been a better leader in the UFA market than the 2019 Conn Smythe winner.
New Press GM Barry Trotz wasn’t done as he also signed UFA Luke Schenn to a 3 year deal valued at $2.75 million AAV, bringing the big, hulking defenceman to Smashville for the near future.
Schenn was another of the Leafs deadline day additions last season, bringing him in from Vancouver as he proved to be a valuable addition to the Leafs blueline as they won their first playoff series since 2004.
While Schenn may not have the footspeed for a more fast-paced modern game, but his large frame, high defensive IQ and underrated set of passing skills will certainly make him a valuable addition for the Preds.
