Washington Capitals’ Rasmus Sandin: A Bright Future Ahead

Since joining the team, Rasmus Sandin has exceeded expectations and become a vital part of the Capitals’ defense.

Given the injury situation of the Captials, and the departure of key peices, Sandin has found himself as the Capitals number one defenseman, which is a complete contrast compared to the playtime that he recevied in Toronto. At only 23 years of age, he has made a name for himself and become a fan favourite amongst Captials fans.

One offensive tool that has been a treat to watch is the little head fake he does when entering the netural zone. This allows him to deceive opposing defenders and create space for himself, and break into the zone.

Even though the offensive has stood out greatly, he has definatly proven himself to be a solid on the back end as well. His excellent skating ability and mobility allow him to keep up with some of the league’s fastest forwards, while his positioning and awareness allow him to break up plays and disrupt opposing offenses.Sandin’s high hockey IQ also helps him make smart decisions with the puck and avoid turnovers, which is crucial for any defenseman.

It has been an impressive stretch for the Capitals defenseman has he as accumulated 10 points in his last 7 games, demonstrating his offensive talent; such as his key vision, allowing him to set up his teammates for goals. With Sandin’s skill set and growing confidence, and greater familiarity with the team as a whole, it will be interesting to see how far he can grow and develop as a player from this point on.
