After it was revealed today by the Manchester United medical staff that midfielder Christian Eriksen will be out until “at least” the end of April or beginning of May with an ankle injury, United have used their precious little time to sign a replacement before the January transfer window shuts.
United are light on options in midfield, especially with Donny van de Beek already out for the rest of the season, which has led to talks with Bayern Munich to sign midfielder Sabitzer, who has been identified as a short-term option, on loan
The 28-year-old Austrian joined the Bavarian giants in August 2021 following 229 appearances in six seasons with RB Leipzig where he than made a following 54 appearances for Bayern as he won the Bundesliga title for the first time in 2022.
Sabitzer can be deployed all across the pitch as a winger, centre forward but his most preferred role is in the heart of midfield. While not much of a goal threat in Munich as he was in Leipzig, where he picked up 54 goals during his time in East Germany, United will not be signing Sabitzer due to a lack of goalscoring.
Containing a lot of the same passing talents and high intelligence that has made Eriksen a staple to Erik Ten Hag’s United side this season, Sabitzer is also renowned for his high pressing and tackling abilities which would fit the Dutchman’s system perfectly.
While the move is initially a loan deal until the end of the season, should Sabitzer impress until the end of the season United can make the move permanent in the summer.
