As the FIFA 2022 Qatar World Cup approaches, there is much excitement around the superstars that will be competing for the world’s most coveted trophy. However, not all players will get the opportunity to represent their nation given the 26 man limit on each roster.
Some players could be injured due to the ongoing club season, some out of form, and some may not have been selected for tactical reasons, however it is clear that several elite players around the world will be at home watching.
This roster will not include players representing nations that did not qualify for the World Cup.
Fikayo Tomori
The AC Milan star defender will not be given the opportunity to represent England in Qatar this winter. Gareth Southgate has received much criticism for this decision, given his selection of Harry Maguire, over the AC Milan star. This had come to the shock of many as the Canadian born, England international who helped AC Milan win the league title last season has been dominate and displayed excellent form going into the tournament.
Mats Hummels

The German international who had previously won the World Cup in 2018 was not selected by Hansi Flick, despite his experience and veteran leadership. The snubbing of arguably one of the best defenders of the generation was likely done to give the squad a more youthful look.
Paul Pogba
The Juventus and France superstar will not be playing in Qatar to help defend France’s world cup title from 2018. Unfortunately Pogba had suffered an injury going into the tournament. This will likely be felt on the pitch given Pogba’s dominance for Les Bleus in recent years.
However it can also be argued that given their depth on the roster, Didier Deschamps will have the opportunity to let younger players get the opportunity to shine.
Thiago Alcantara
Known as one of the most technical players in the world, Thiago was not selected by Enrique despite his excellent form on a poor Liverpool side.
It seems like Enrique felt he had many technically gifted midfielders on his talented Spanish roster. It must also be noted that Thiago is known to be an excellent player at the club level, but rarely gets the opportunity to play for Spain.
Diogo Jota

One final player that will be missing the world cup is Portugal’s Diogo Jota. The Portuguese international suffered an injury that has left him outside of Santos’ squad this winter.
