Maple Leafs Host Senators as Hockey Night In Canada Returns for the 2022-23 NHL Season

The Battle of Ontario is born anew as the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators face-off at Scotiabank Arena this evening on Hockey Night in Canada. Playing their third game in four nights; The Maple Leafs are looking for consecutive victories after losing 4-3 to the Montreal Canadiens in their season-opener then beating the Washington Capitals 3-2 on the second night of a back-to-back. The Senators also suffered a loss in their 2022-23 debut, falling 4-1 to the youthful Buffalo Sabres.

The Maple Leafs held morning skate with the expectation that goaltender Matt Murray would get the starting nod against his former team on Saturday night. Murray however exited the session early following what has been described as groin discomfort by head coach Sheldon Keefe. Toronto Marlies goaltender Erik Källgren has been recalled by the Maple Leafs to back up Ilya Samsonov in place of Murray.

23-year-old captain; Brady Tkachuk, scored the lone goal for Ottawa in their aforementioned tilt against Buffalo. Head coach DJ Smith will surely be looking for a stronger offensive output from his top-six forward group that’s been lauded by many as among the best in the NHL. In last seasons Battle of Ontario the Maple Leafs won three of the four matchups against the Senators, outscoring them 16-8.
