In what looks to be a great deal for both sides. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is moving from Barcelona to Chelsea for a feel roughly worth about $15m and Marcos Alonso going the other way.
The former Arsenal striker will be making his return to the Premier League and even the city of London, but will be wearing a different colored shirt this time around. The London derby has been quite competitive, and with Arsenal on their way up, this could make for an interesting rivarly.
Aubameyang leaving Barcelona means that he will not be competing against star striker Robert Lewandowski for the starting striker role at the Nou Camp. It also means that Xavi’s team can recover some of the funds they spent on player signings this season.
Chelsea have also struggled this season in regards to a pure striker. The 100m+ move that sent Lukaku back to London did not work out, and though full of attacking depth, the London Blues are clearly lacking a striker. They are currently playing Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling as main men down the middle, but the need for a pure number nine is evidently missing.
The purchase of Aubameyang also shows that new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is willing to spend, and invest in his newly acquired team. Given the rumors around transfers this window, it is clear that Boehly is willing to give Tuchel the financial backing he needs to contend for titles this season.
