Toronto FC Sign Former Italian International Domenico Criscito from Genoa

As it was reported on Friday, Toronto FC are set to sign fullback/center-half Domenico Criscito from Genoa for free as his contract expired.

Criscito, 35, is a former Italian International but hasn’t represented the Azzurri since October 2018.

He has spent the last four seasons playing for Genoa after he returned from an eight year spell playing in the Russian Premier Liga with Zenit St. Petersburg, before which he had his first spell with I Rossoblu.

In total he has made 508 top flight appearances in his time in Italy and Russia and will be a very experienced presence on the TFC backline when he arrives in Canada.

Criscito will also be the second former Serie A star to arrive on Canadian shores as it is expected that he will be revealed to the media on Friday along with Euro 2020 Champion Lorenzo Insigne following his free transfer from Napoli.

With the arrivals of both Insigne and Criscito, TFC will hope that their two new designated players will become pillars for the team as they look to crawl out of the bottom of the Eastern Conference table as they sit in 12th with only 15 points.

It was long rumoured that Criscito would join Toronto, and a deal was close to fruition back in March, but it ultimately fell through as Criscito wanted to finish the season in Italy and help Genoa stave off relegation, which they ultimately failed to do as they will spend next season in the second tier of Italian football.
