On the Move – 2024 NHL UFA Class: Tyler Toffoli

TORONTO – Flashback to June 27, 2023, Tyler Toffoli had just been traded to the New Jersey Devils from the Calgary Flames. He would later be moved again at the 2024 trade deadline to the Winnipeg Jets. This year, he’s set to cash in on the open market once free-agency begins on July 1.

Toffoli scored seven goals over the final 18 regular season games with Winnipeg, finishing the season with 33 goals and 55 points in 79 games with the Devils and Jets. While his point production dipped from last season in Calgary, Toffoli has proven he is still a valuable goal-scorer with back-to-back 30 goal campaigns.

Suiting up for six teams already in his career, there will be no shortage of organizations that are familiar with Toffoli and will be looking to bring him back into the fold. His Stanley Cup experience with the Los Angeles Kings combined with his goal-scoring ability will make him a key target for a number of teams this summer.

Coming off the four-year, $17 million contract he signed with the Montreal Canadiens in 2020, at 32 years old Toffoli will be looking for a similar term to take him through to the later part of his career.

Here are some of the potential landing spots for Tyler Toffoli.

Los Angeles Kings

With the potential departure of fellow unrestricted free agent Viktor Arvidsson, the Los Angeles Kings could be looking at a reunion with Toffoli. With their projected $22.35 million available in cap space this summer, the Kings can afford to strengthen their forward group, and Toffoli could slide into the middle-six to provide scoring depth.

Toffoli spent the majority of eight seasons with the Kings, but has moved around quite a bit since the 2019-20 season when he was first moved out of L.A. to Vancouver. With the move to Winnipeg this past season, Toffoli had been traded three times in the last four years.

A trip back to L.A. might be just what Toffoli is looking for to nail down a long-term home in a familiar market that still hosts former teammates Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty. Toffoli and his agent Pat Brisson (CAA) will also be familiar with Kings general manager Rob Blake, who signed Toffoli to a three-year $13.8 million contract back in 2017.

PREDICTION: $23 MILLION OVER 4 YEARS ($5.75 MILLION AAV)

Boston Bruins

Losing to the Florida Panthers for the second straight year in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it’s expected that the Boston Bruins will be active this offseason. Scoring more than two goals only once in their six-game series against the Panthers, the Bruins will be looking for an impact player to help improve their offence.

Toffoli, a versatile player who can play in multiple situations, would instantly improve the scoring capabilities of Boston’s second or third line. With Jake DeBrusk likely on his way out as a free agent, Toffoli would be an offensive upgrade, bringing his Stanley Cup pedigree to a Bruins team that has become a lot younger over the last few years.

With over $21 million in expected cap space this summer, the Bruins will likely have their eyes on the best available players. Toffoli could end up an ancillary piece that helps support a new-look Bruins team, or as a larger part of the process. In either instance, look for the Boston Bruins to take a good run at bringing in Tyler Toffoli.

PREDICTION: $22 MILLION OVER 4 YEARS ($5.5 MILLION AAV)

Vancouver Canucks

Another one of Toffoli’s ex-teams, the Canucks could opt to bring back the Stanley Cup champ, whose first stop outside of California was a trade deadline move to Vancouver in 2020.

The Canucks have been rumoured to chase Jake Guentzel, but with that seemingly now out of reach, Vancouver will look to another goal-scoring forward in Toffoli to help fill the hole that Elias Lindholm will leave. Toffoli can offer some secondary scoring behind the likes of J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson, and Brock Boeser.

After dealing Ilya Mikheyev to the Blackhawks earlier this week, the Canucks have money to spend. With around $12 million in projected cap space, they could opt to allot a chunk of that to a player in Toffoli’s expected range to help improve the team going into 2024-25.

PREDICTION: $15.75 MILLION OVER 3 YEARS ($5.25 MILLION AAV)

Regardless of the situation, Tyler Toffoli will have a number of options to choose from this summer as he looks to find a home and try to win another Stanley Cup. It can be expected that a number of his former clubs will be looking to reunite with the 32 year old, but look for some new contenders will be vying for his support as well heading into the 2024-25 NHL season.
